Fisheries inspector Charles Lasisi, a tall charming and intelligent young man from New Ireland, lost his life several weeks ago at the hands of six RD tuna workers in the waters of Vanimo. He had just boarded their tuna vessel to complain about the illegal netting of dolphins. Charlie was thrown overboard and drowned. The six RD workers are free on bail in Madang pending their court case.
The following are very hasty phone photos from a Karkar copra boat skipper who came upon a tuna boat net 3 km from Dogoma Village today. Charlie may not be here now, but Madang fishermen certainly are.
This is a dolphin caught by RD vessel Tunaball 28, Serial No. 1202621-WDD 8934, Seadefender 28.
